The Ghana Telecommunications Chamber in collaboration with the Cyber Security Authority (CSA) have educated about 2000 students, teachers and parents within the La-Dadekotopon Municipal Assembly in Accra.
The educational exercises, which formed part of the 2022 National Cyber Security Awareness Month, were carried out in 2 different schools in the capital region.
The first engagement took place at St. Thomas Aquinas SHS on October 19, 2022 under the theme Cybercrime/Cybersecurity Sensitisation in Private Schools. About 1,500 students from SHS 1 and SHS 2 along with their teachers were taken through key topics such as “the reality of cybercrime on social media”, “the consequences of engaging in cybercrime” and “steps to take to protect ones’ self online”.
The informative sessions, which were handled by experts from the Cyber Security Authority, AirtelTigo, Vodafone and MTN, were followed by an interactive question and answer time, as well as the gifting of numerous prizes and souvenirs to the entire student body and teaching staff.
Taking his turn to address the student the CEO of the Ghana Chamber of Telecommunications Ing. Dr. Kenneth Ashigbey charged the students to take advantage of the numerous opportunities presented by the digital platforms around them and also take steps to protect themselves.
The second engagement took place at the Labone SDA School on October 21, 2022 on the theme Digital Parenting Forum on Child Online Protection. Parents of students of the school who were the target audience of the engagement were also taken through different topics bordering on “how parents can protect themselves, their business and their children online”.
The facilitators from AirtelTigo, MTN and Vodafone all reiterated the need for parents to exercise extreme care in the information they put online, the people they interact with online and the liberties they give their children when it comes to their use of digital devices and the content they consume.
About the National Cyber Security Awareness Month 2022
The National Cyber Security Awareness Month (NCSAM) 2022 is a month-long event in October under the theme, “Regulating Cybersecurity: A Public-Private Sector Collaborative Approach”.
The key objectives of NCSAM 2022 are to:
- Enhance public-private sector understanding of cybersecurity regulations
- Receive inputs from industry players and stakeholders on the implementation of the various regulatory activities currently being implemented by the CSA
- Build synergies among all relevant stakeholders to ensure compliance with cybersecurity regulations
- Create awareness of the Cybersecurity Act 2020 and promote the relevance of cybersecurity regulations among children, the Public, Businesses and the Government, whilst highlighting the need for public-private cooperation
